Asin Thottumkal Profile
Asin Thottumkal began her career in 2001 with an unsuccessful Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka. In 2003 she came back with a bang in the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi opposite Ravi Teja. Her role in the film subsequently fetched her the Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The same year she did her second Telugu movie titled Shivamani opposite Nagarjuna for which she bagged the Santosham Best Actress Award.
Her following two Telugu films in 2004 were, Lakshmi Narasimha and Gharshana and they proved to be two more solid hit films for her. Asin's first Tamil film was M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi, in which she co-starred with Jayam Ravi. The movie subsequently went on to become one of the biggest hits in Tamil cinema, during 2004, introducing Asin to Tamil film industry.
In 2005 she returned to Telugu films with Chakram which became her first failure as a senior artiste. Then the same year she appeared in Ullam Ketkumae. This film, initially was launched in 2002 and was originally meant to be the launch for Asin as a lead actress. It was a college love story which was long-delayed but eventually became a successful venture at the box-office. After this movie, Asin became publicized as a leading heroine. She signed films with the four leading actors of the Tamil industry: Surya, Vikram, Vijay and Ajith in Ghajini, Majaa, Sivakasi and Varalaru respectively.
The Tamil film Ghajini, opposite Vikram provided the breakthrough for Asin to become the leading South Indian actress. Asin secured the Tamil Filmfare Award for Best Actress again, for Ghajini. Sify.com praised her portrayal in Ghajini as "magical".
The same year Asin had two big releases titled Sivakasi and Majaa. Sivakasi went on to become a successful venture at the box office while Majaa could only get an average response. In 2006 her long-delayed venture, Varalaru opposite Ajith Kumar, released and became the biggest blockbuster of the year in Tamil cinema. Although, the film was hero-centric and it retreated Asin to the sidelines, but her role was well acclaimed by critics.
Later that same year in 2006 Asin also starred in another Telugu box office hit Pawan Kalyan's Annavaram. This film enabled Asin to keep her popularity in Telugu films intact. In January 2007, Asin appeared opposite Ajith Kumar and Vijay in two different films, Aalwar and Pokkiri. Aalwar was a failure but Pokkiri became a super hit. Asin's role in Aalwar was criticized, but her performance in Pokkiri was lauded by critics. In 2007 her final project was Her final project of the year was Vel opposite Surya(co-star of Ghajini). Asin's role as a TV anchor, was appreciated in the film.
In 2008 Asin's first dual role film Dasavathaaram opposite Kamal Haasan which was under production since 2006 released. The film was made by K. S. Ravikumar and had Kamal Hasan portraying ten roles. This film became Asin's largest film till date. Asin's portrayals in the film were praised as her "best-to-date" performances. Dasavathaaram became one of the biggest blockbusters in South Indian film history.
After establishing herself as the leading actress in South India, Asin opted to move into Bollywood, to get nationwide fame. Her first Bollywood film is Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan. This film is the remake of her breakthrough film of the same name. The film has garnered positive reactions from critics and masses. Asin has been singled out for her "fabulous" portray. Critic, Taran Adarsh also has appreciated her acting skills.
The only other project Asin is committed to, as of 2009, is Vipul Shah's London Dreams alongside Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, in which she plays a member of a five-troupe band. But this tollywood beauty is all determined to star in more bollywood projects along with stars like Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachan, Saif Ali Khan and many more.
